Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) is a full-thickness corneal transplant procedure used to replace the entire cornea with a donor cornea. This procedure is typically recommended for patients with severe corneal damage, scarring, or disease that affects the transparency and function of the cornea.
The surgery involves removing the damaged cornea and stitching the donor cornea into place. Penetrating keratoplasty is highly effective for restoring vision in patients with corneal diseases like keratoconus or corneal scarring.
Although recovery time can be longer than other corneal transplant procedures, PK has a high success rate and can dramatically improve vision and quality of life.
